Social responsibility
The interests and needs of Welsh communities are at the very heart of Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru.
We’re a Welsh company. Our staff live here, work here, are bringing up families here and are part of the local communities where we live. We share many of the values, concerns and hopes of communities with whom we’ll work, including those neighbouring and hosting our future projects, and across Wales
Over the coming months and years, we’ll be working with local communities to identify a range of ways in which you can be involved in, and benefit from Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru projects. Meaningful participation in developments are essential to deliver benefits for Wales and to drive the energy transition forward.
Much of the value of major infrastructure developments, are associated with the investment, jobs and skills they lock into a locality and nation. We will demonstrate best practice in incorporating social value into our procurement process, and into all aspects of project development, construction and operation.
Additional ways in which people might experience "power to prosper" include:
- Community Benefit Funds set up, with and for, local communities, addressing short-term needs and interests.
- Wales-wide, long-term strategic investment funds.
- Could households and businesses across Wales be helped to decarbonise?
- Should investment focus on preparing us for the effects of climate change that cannot be avoided, like flooding and coastal erosion, or ensuring public buildings are safe in extreme hot or cold weather conditions?
- Or would people across Wales like some of the eventual profit generated from state owned renewable energy generation to be dedicated to national, long-term priorities, like climate change, health, social care, child care, skills and education, or social housing?
Trydan will ask your views.
Welsh Government will use your responses in its approach to the profits.
Environmental sustainability
Through our business and individual projects, Trydan is committed to protecting the environment, improving natural resources, and promoting nature-based solutions and green infrastructure.
All our projects will be thoroughly assessed and determined through the planning system, like any other renewable energy development in Wales. The “utility” scale of our projects means they will be determined by the Welsh Ministers. Decisions will be made independently and objectively, as for any application.
Assessing environmental effects is a key part of the planning process. We will carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for all our projects. The EIA process will assess the potential effects (both positive and negative) our projects could have on the environment and ensure that these are considered in the design process. The EIA will look at a range of topics such as forestry, cultural heritage, landscape and visual impact, ornithology, and ecology over the lifetime of the project – from construction, through operation, and to decommissioning.
The EIA process will help us to identify how best we can reduce the potential environmental effects of our projects and explore the measures we would take to avoid, mitigate, or compensate for these effects. Alongside an extensive and wide-ranging programme of stakeholder consultation, this process will enable us to build effective and valuable environmental benefits into the design of our projects.
We recognise that the construction and operation of renewable energy developments can affect the communities around them. Our aim is to design projects that are sensitive to surrounding communities and respond to the distinctive character of the local environment. Consultation is an important part of the design (and planning) process as it enables everyone to comment on the proposals. The feedback we receive from the community and other stakeholders, along with the detailed technical and environmental studies, will inform the development of our proposals.
Delivering for Wales, developing sustainable projects
Power to prosper: Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru projects will help deliver a greener, stronger, fairer Wales.
Our aim is to optimise the benefits to the whole of Wales from the development of renewable energy projects, primarily on the Welsh Government Woodland Estate. We will do this through:
- Public ownership during the development phase – delivering consented projects is the first value-creating-step in the lifetime of renewable energy infrastructure projects.
- Management of detailed design and construction – optimising the involvement of Welsh goods and services companies, supporting hundreds of engineering and construction jobs, and securing, managing and directing huge investment into the local economies.
- Operating projects during their 35 years of generation, delivering long term value for Wales, as all the revenue from the sale of electricity, stays in Wales, and will be managed by our only shareholder, the Welsh Government.
The programme of renewable energy projects being developed by Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru will help to deliver home-grown renewable electricity which will contribute towards the 2050 net zero targets set by Senedd Cymru. Our projects will contribute to 2030 (grid infrastructure permitting) and 2040 interim targets on our Nation’s Net Zero Pathway, and reducing our reliance on more carbon-intensive forms of electricity generation, providing new, clean energy to power homes and businesses, in Wales and across the UK.
