Eisteddfod yr Urdd 2026: Trydan celebrate environmental champions

On Tuesday the 26th of May, the fourth day of the Urdd Eisteddfod on Ynys Mon, at Anglesey showground, Catrin Ellis Jones was on the Maes representing Trydan. Trydan sponsored the ‘Scientific Project for Year 7, 8, and 9’ competition this year, and are keen to see how young people from across Wales apply their creativity and ingenuity to science subjects, as well as the arts and music.

This year's Urdd Eisteddfod is the greenest ever, with electricity provision from the grid, boosted by solar panels, and a green hydrogen generator. This achievement is even more impressive when you consider that 118,000 competitors are part of the festival - a record for an Eisteddfod in north Wales. Llongyfarchiadau - congratulations to the Urdd!

And huge congratulations too  to Ella Foskett - this year's champion of the science competition, awarded the prize for her research and report on the impact of plastic waste on marine life.

Winner of Scientific Project with Catrin Eliis Jones of Trydan.

Ella, a 13-year-old pupil from Llanidloes High School, is passionate about science. She enjoyed doing the research for the essay and learning about different types of plastic and their serious impact on marine life.

Ella believes that more scientists and people pursuing technical and experimental careers are needed to be able to offer solutions to some of the great challenges facing humanity, and her generation in particular.

"A lot of attention has to be paid to the environment, and care has to be taken, or there will be nothing left," says Ella.

"I think renewable energy is great! It is important in order to reduce carbon emissions and prevent climate change. It's also cheap. We have solar panels on our house."

Catrin Ellis Jones, Head of Public Involvement at Trydan said:

"It's so nice to see so much talent on the Maes of the Eisteddfod, on the stages and in the art tent. Ella is a young person with great creative capacity, and she will obviously do her best for nature, and the environment, in the future."

Well done Ella, and well done to everyone competing!"

Trydan is in the Gwyddonle on Thursday and Friday all day, with a Big Trydan Quiz between 2-3pm on both days. Come and see us!
